Context
Observations have led to advances in astronomical knowledge. Detection relies on two main functions : the collection of photons (optical systems, antennas, etc.) and the conversion of the collected photons into an electrical signal (detectors).
LIRA’s instrumental developments are based on :
- the collection of photons under the responsibility of the optical architect ; who works in close collaboration with the mechanical and thermal architects
- the conversion of photons into an electrical signal under the responsibility of the detector architect, who works in close collaboration with the electronic architecture team.
The laboratory’s experience in the field of scientific instrument development is widely recognized. Astronomers formulate scientific questions that are answered using instrumental data.
Based on the scientific specifications, the systems team draws up the technical specifications for the new instrument. The engineers then design and monitor the industrial development process. They check the subsystems produced by the industry, which has the latest technologies. These components are then assembled step by step and tested at each stage to validate each step. In the case of space experiments, the instruments are qualified
