Research topics
LIRA’s primary mission is astrophysics research aimed at improving our understanding of the Universe. It covers most of the components of the Universe :
- within our Solar System : the Sun, the planets, small bodies, but also the plasma of the interplanetary medium and its interaction with objects in the Solar System ;
- other stars in our Galaxy, through the study of their activity and internal structure ;
- extrasolar planets, the detection of which is a cross-disciplinary activity within LIRA ;
- the interstellar medium, and more specifically the dust and gas within star-forming regions in our Galaxy and in nearby galaxies ;
- the cores of nearby galaxies, which are often the site of highly energetic phenomena linked to the presence of supermassive black holes, about which little is yet known.
This research is divided into fifteen major themes.
