A moment of scientific and cultural exchange between LIRA and young Hong Kong talent in training in the fields of artificial intelligence and intelligent manufacturing systems.

A day of scientific discoveries with researchers at LIRA

On 6 June 2025, LIRA was delighted to welcome a group of 18 first- and second-year students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou), accompanied by four lecturers, as part of a cross-cultural mobility programme organised by Alain Doressoundiram and Jean-Louis Bougeret.

The students explored several historic instruments that are emblematic of the Meudon site : the Grand Réfracteur, the 1-metre telescope and the Spectrohéliographe. The visit continued in the afternoon with a series of scientific talks on a variety of topics, from planetary science to deep learning, asteroseismology and measuring the mass of the Andromeda galaxy.

This exchange was marked by the enthusiasm and curiosity of the students, who were delighted to discuss major contemporary scientific issues with French researchers.

International collaboration for science education

This visit is part of an international academic and cultural programme aimed at developing a global and interdisciplinary approach to scientific education. Organised by HKUST(GZ), the programme offers students specialising in artificial intelligence and intelligent manufacturing systems the opportunity to immerse themselves in prestigious French teaching and research establishments, such as the École polytechnique, Sciences Po and the Observatoire de Paris.

By welcoming these young up-and-coming researchers, the Observatoire de Paris is strengthening its role as a place for international scientific dialogue, where disciplines, cultures and generations come together to think about the future of research and innovation.
